That Tunisia is "a free country whose religion is Islam and whose official language is Arabic" (art. 1 of the old constitution) is a fact. Yet the political must be separated from the religious, for the first victims of the absence of such a separation would be the religious people themselves. No matter how good a religious man or woman you are, no matter how strong your religious convictions may be, there will always be someone, some group, or some party, whose interpretation of the sacred texts is different from yours, who would incriminate you and would, in the name of religioin, either shoot you in a football stadium or hang you in a town square. !!
